KICKBOXING FOR GIRLS: SELF-DEFENSE GUIDELINES QUIZ
By Jessica Faller-Berger

1. You are at the mall by yourself when you notice that there is a man lurking outside of every store when you leave. He gives you the creeps and he won’t stop following you. You should:

A) Leave the mall through the back door of the next shop you enter, and run as fast as you can to your car.
B ) Tell the cashier at the next store to call the security guards because you are being followed. Wait with the cashier or store manager until security guards arrive to escort you to your car or ride.
C ) Turn on your cell phone, call your mom and tell her what is happening as you run to your car or bus stop.
D ) Tell the man who is following you to leave you alone. If he doesn’t leave you alone, kick him.

2. A police officer approaches you on the street, calling you by name. He says that your parents are in serious danger and that he needs your help right away to rescue them. You should:

A) Explain to him that your parents got divorced 5 years ago, and that you live with your Grandmother now.
B) You should go with the Police Officer because they might put you in jail for disobeying the law and also you could risk being responsible for your parents’ death.
C) Run away as fast as you can. If a car is chasing you, turn around and run in the opposite direction that the car is going.

3. You are working at a store all by yourself. A man comes into the store and something about him is scary. He says he is in the mood to “knock people’s hats off” and that he used to be in the marines. He “accidentally” knocks some items off of the counter, and every second you become more frightened. You should:

A) Call 9-1-1, and tell the dispatcher that you are alone with an assaultive customer and you need immediate assistance. Never turn your back on him. Try not to let him get between yourself and the door. Keep a wide “fighter” stance, place your hands on your hips, and attempt to leave if possible.
B ) Run to the back of the store and lock yourself in the bathroom.
C ) Pull out your knife and tell him to get lost or he’ll die.
D ) Don’t worry so much. Have some compassion, because he may be shell shocked from the Gulf War. If you show him that people care, he will be nice to you. Also try to put yourself in his shoes and imagine how you would like it if everywhere you went, people got scared.

4. You are at a party with people you do not know. You want to get up and dance, so you put your Coca-Cola down on a table in the next room. When you are finished dancing, you are thirsty so you should:

A) Get your Coca-Cola from the next room. Don’t waste it. You are lucky to be able to afford Coca-Cola. In some countries, people don’t even have clean water.
B ) Take some of the punch from the punch bowl because it was just poured and its fresher.
C ) When at a party, never leave your drink unattended and do not drink punch or any other drink that can have substances added to it. Do not drink anything that is being passed around. You should drink water from the tap or pour your own drink out of a closed can that you open yourself because of the possibility that someone could add rohypnol of GHB to your drink, which causes paralysis, coma and even death.

5. You are finally old enough to drive. You’ve parked your car in a well lit area, and are returning to your car alone. You should:

A) Sing on the top of your lungs so that people hear you.
B ) Check under the car and in the car before you get inside the car.
C ) Wear high heels, a pony tail, and an outfit with buttons down the front.

6. You are out on a walk when a worried man tells you he has lost his puppy and needs help finding the puppy? You should:

A) Run away as fast as you can.
B ) Ask the man what the puppy looked like and look for it.
C ) Give the man your phone number so that if you find the puppy you can tell him.

7. You are at an internet chat room. One of the people at the chat room sounds especially interesting because she likes the same bands that you do and watches the same TV shows. She asks if you would like to meet her for ice cream. You should:

A) Describe what you look like and tell her where you go to school so she can meet you right on the school grounds
B ) Give her your address so she can come right to your house
C ) Tell your mom or dad that someone on the internet is trying to set up a meeting with you. Do not give out any personal information such as real name, address, phone number or school over the internet because sometimes adults pretend to be kids and arrange meetings that way that could be fatal.

8. It is the future and you are now 17. You have an amazingly cute boyfriend who won’t let you visit your old friends, gets mad at you if you talk to anyone but him, and needs to know exactly where you are every minute of the day. You should:

A) Not do anything to make him mad.
B ) Tell your old friends to quit calling you so he won’t get upset and make sure that you show up where you say you will.
C ) Recognize that extreme jealousy, isolative behaviours, and the need to know where you are every minute of the day are warning signals of teen dating violence. Get help from family, friends, or a counselor to end the relationship before violence occurs.

9. You have a boyfriend who pushed you into a door and your arm is bruised. You should:

A) Realize it was probably your fault.
B ) Ask friends and family to be with you when you break up with him because he is violent and his violence could get worse when you announce the break up.
C ) Try to walk behind him so he can’t push you.

10. You are older now and on your first date with a new guy. You are not sure why, but something about him scares you. He hasn’t done anything that you can put into words, but something feels a bit off. You should:

A) Have extra alcohol so that his personality doesn’t bother you as much
B ) Ask him to drive you home
C ) Call a taxi (call 4-1-1 to get the number), and pay the cab fare with the hidden money you take with you on every date.
